This lesson will explore the following topics:
This lesson will acquaint students with life care planning issues for individuals with burn injuries. Specific issues relating to pediatric aspects of burn injury will be highlighted. The lesson will cover the epidemiology, etiology, assessment, and classification of burn injuries, and the clinical care/treatment of children who have suffered burn injuries. Students will understand the management of burns and complications of burn injuries. Student will also understand the planning needs and issues that need to be addressed when developing a plan for a pediatric burn injury client.

- Chapter 14: “Life Care Planning for the Burn Patient” in Life Care Planning and Case Management Handbook (3rd or 4th edition)
In this chapter, the authors discuss life care planning as it relates to individuals who have sustained a burn injury. The classification of burn injury is reviewed, the consequences of burns are discussed, and rehabilitation issues are addressed. The authors provide the reader with an excellent table that addresses the complications of burn injury. A case example is presented at the end of the chapter. - Read Chapter 21: “Life Care Planning for the Pediatric Burn Patient” in Pediatric Life Care Planning and Case Management, Second Edition, 2011. Or, Read Chapter 28: “Life Care Planning for Children with Pediatric Burns” in Pediatric Life Care Planning and Case Management, First Edition, 2004. In this chapter, Rimmer and Caruso, 2011 [Sheridan and Fox, 2004] address the clinical care and treatment of children who have survived a burn injury. They describe the initial evaluation and resuscitation phase, initial wound excision and closure phase, the definitive wound closure phase, and the rehabilitation, reconstruction, and reintegration phase. The authors also discuss aspects of care that need to be considered when developing a life care plan for a child with a burn injury.
