The purpose of this lesson is to acquaint the student with the medical aspects of spinal cord injury in children. This lesson will describe the causes, prevalence and functions of the spinal cord as they relate to pediatrics.
- Understand the basics of spinal cord injury as it relates to the pediatric population
1. Read pgs 65-69 of Chapter 4: “The Role of the Life Care Planner in Pediatric Life Care Planning” in Pediatric Life Care Planning and Case Management.
This part of Chapter 4 discusses the unique considerations that life care planners need to consider when creating life care plans for pediatric clients. Considerations include: family response to development and transitions and long-term living options.
2. Read pages 332-336 of Chapter 15: “Life Care Planning for the Child with Spinal Cord Injury” in Pediatric Life Care Planning and Case Management.
This section of the chapter introduces the reader to pediatric spinal cord injury. Unique etiologies of SCI for the pediatric population are explained.
3. Read pages 392- 393 of Chapter 16: “Life Care Planning for Children with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities” in Pediatric Life Care Planning and Case Management.
This section of this chapter describes “Spina Bifida,” a congenital disease of the spinal column.
