There are several factors that affect the individual with chronic pain’s decision on whether or not they should return to work. These include, but are not limited to: “the physical demands of the job, job availability, regional variation in the job market, availability of job accommodations, marketability of patient’s skills, extent of wage replacement, and financial incentives.”

Other influences include: “the number of surgeries the person has had, time off work, application for pension payments, and the patient’s pre-treatment beliefs regarding return to work.”
