This lesson will acquaint the student with the problems and issues encountered by individuals with multiple amputations. While all amputations are significant, those individuals who have bilateral or multiple amputations are often faced with numerous handicaps and may remain very dependent on long-term support services.

  • Identify the complications faced by individuals with multiple amputations
  • Describe the unique vocational issues encountered by individuals with multiple amputations

(Note: You should start with the section “Life Care Planning with the Physiatrist.”) This reading assignment will introduce the student to the process used by a physiatrist when evaluating a patient with an amputation. Information on high-voltage electrical burn injuries, which often lead to multiple amputations, is reviewed. Potential complications are also addressed.
