Dr. Horace Sawyer has been involved in the rehabilitation consultation field for over 35 years.  At the beginning of his career, he was one of the pioneers of this field; now, Dr. Sawyer is considered one of the premier consultants in the nation.  He has devoted his entire career to the advancement of the rehabilitation profession and quality education in many areas, including Life Care Planning.  After earning his doctorate in counseling with an emphasis in rehabilitation in 1972, Dr. Sawyer went on to work in many different aspects of the industry, including work as a rehabilitation agency counselor, rehabilitation consultant to statewide comprehensive rehabilitation centers, and rehabilitation center director.  In addition, he has been on the faculties of many prestigious educational institutions, including the University of Tennessee, Southern Illinois University, and most recently the University of Florida.  For the past 23 years, Dr. Sawyer has served as chair for the Department of Rehabilitation Counseling at the University of Florida, and in 1995, he was responsible for initiating a national training program in this field at the University.  In 2004, Dr. Sawyer was honored with the life care planning lifetime achievement award at the International Conference on Life Care Planning.  In addition to Dr. Sawyer’s career in academia, training, and consulting he co-authored A Guide to Rehabilitation which has been the foundation for the development and growth of life care planning and rehabilitation consultation.  Dr. Sawyer has been an independent rehabilitation consultant for 20 years and is an expert on life care planning curriculum development.
